This course offers an introduction to Western music theory. However, it will adopt an unconventional approach in treating Western music not as an autonomous, isolated tradition, but in relation to other musical traditions of the world. Such an approach has become increasingly necessary as contemporary musical culture has ever more internationalized. Therefore we will examine concepts such as mode, rhythm, and form from a comparative perspective, considering their distinctive characteristics in different regions of the world.
